Numerical geometry, through relational systems such as the vesica piscis and the golden ratio, becomes a guiding structure for Pedestal’s formation within space. Its height corresponds to human gestures of placing and sitting, allowing the object to remain ambiguous—between side table and temporary stool. North American Black Walnut, with its rich and sophisticated materiality, brings the work closer to domestic space, while its classically inspired form retains a sense of solemnity.
Rosewood (红木/ hóng mù), is an indispensable category of wood in the history of Chinese woodworking, furniture, and cabinetry. Within this larger material category, Siamese Rosewood (红酸枝/ hóng suān zhī), is used here not only as a material choice, but also as a way of engaging with the knowledge of Chinese craftsmen introducing that material understanding with a more Western formal language. What is striking about this wood, as seen throughout traditional Chinese furniture, is its particular sense of historical weight and integrity.
