Held in Form, 2026
Held in Form is a furniture series consisting of five objects: Pedestal, Vessel Stand, Console, Bench, and Seat. Drawing from the stack lamination technique learned from Terry Ryu at the Wendell Castle Workshop, designing through a numerical and geometric methodology, and observing everyday furniture typologies and utility, together forming a design language of complex form in harmonization.

When the formational use of curves and lines, considered alongside the console’s utilitarian condition, negotiates with an essentialist approach to material shaping, the object begins to reveal a complex cohabitation of forms. There is, therefore, a complexity of cohabitation in a single simple object.

This investigation of form reaches a moment in which space is articulated through the progression of point, line, and plane. Rather than describing a predefined object, curved lines trace and define spatial boundaries from which form gradually emerges.Through this process, point, line, and plane interconnect and establish the structural logic of the whole. Seating is not introduced as a separate intention, but actualized through its use in a continuous definition of space. What emerges is not simply a chair, but a spatial condition whose formal logic happens to accommodate the human body.

When a person’s behavior toward an object becomes intimate enough, as in the act of sitting, the object begins to carry a human touch in its relation to the body. Long seating, in particular, holds a condition of shareability through the dimension of sitting, while a bench further connects this shared use to a recognizable physical structure and typology.

In ancient Roman architecture, entasis was used as a form of visual correction, subtly enlarging the base of a column in relation to its top to balance the perceptual experience of the structure within space. Vessel Stand approximates this visual logic through a calculated reduction from bottom to top, allowing such proportion to guide both form and perception. With minimal lines and planes defining its body, the object offers a singular gesture: to level, support, and hold what rests above it.
